Are you planning to move to a new house this year? Perhaps you are already in the process of moving. No doubt we are all aware of what a stressful time it can be. It is at these stressful times that we are not, perhaps, as vigilant with regards to the environment as we could be. What are some things we can do ahead to prepare ourselves for a move, and at the same time being environmentally responsible?
A good thing to do is start sorting out your belongings way in advance. Have a sort out of things you no longer use. Its best to do this when you are not under pressure, so the week you are moving is a bad time for this. Remember, the less you actually have to move, the less stressful it will be. RECYCLE! Once you have a pile of things you don’t want, separate them into piles to recycle, donate or even for a yard sale. There are many items we have in our homes that, if thrown away in the garbage, would be terrible for the environment. Things like chemicals, paint cans, batteries, light bulbs and electronic equipment are all examples of what not to simply throw away. Take some time to get rid of these ahead of moving day in the appropriate manner. If you are unsure what to do with them, call your local environmental agency who will advise you. We are very aware of what a very stressful experience moving house can be, but simplifying your life ahead of time will help relieve some of the stress, and make you feel more organized.
